What is Ultherapy Facelift?

The Ultherapy Facelift is a non-invasive and non-surgical procedure that uses ultrasound energy to tighten and lift the skin on the face, neck, and décolletage.

As we reach our 20s, our body starts to produce significantly less collagen and elastin than before. In fact, we produce about 1% less collagen in the skin each year after the age of 20. Collagen fibres are important for building the infrastructure for proteins such as elastin and hyaluronic acid, which is what makes the skin elastic and well-hydrated. With less collagen, the skin on our face, neck, and décolletage becomes thinner, drier, looser, and more susceptible to wrinkles.

Although ageing does play a significant role in how our skin looks over time, other factors can impact the skin as well. Lack of sleep, stress, lifestyle factors, and even diet can lead to unhealthy skin, characterised by a dull and uneven skin tone, dark circles, and acne. By the time you reach your 30s or 40s, you may notice that your face looks tired and haggard, and you don’t look as fresh as you did when you were younger.

The Ultherapy Facelift gives your body the rejuvenating boost it needs to improve skin tone, texture, and appearance. As it does not involve any injectables or surgery, it is known as a non-invasive procedure with little to zero downtime.

How does Ultherapy Facelift work?

The Ultherapy Facelift works by delivering micro-focused ultrasound energy pulses through a handheld device. These energy pulses heat up the dermis (lower layer) of the skin to stimulate the body’s natural collagen production.

Over the next few weeks or months, new collagen growth increases hydration in the skin, while improving laxity and elasticity. This process makes the skin tighter and firmer while smoothening out wrinkles and fine lines. Blemishes, scars, pigmentation, dark circles, and other spots on the face should also reduce as the skin repairs itself.

The HSA (Health Sciences Authority)-approved treatment is safe and does not harm the body, as the energy pulses bypass the top layer of the skin through focused imaging. This allows your doctor to precisely target the depth of your skin at the right temperature. You may feel a warming sensation during the procedure, but should not feel any pain. A topical numbing cream may be applied to make sure that you are comfortable and relaxed during the treatment.

Although Ultherapy is a relatively harmless procedure, it is always best to consult with a licensed doctor  who has the skills and training to carry out this treatment in the safest way possible.

Take note that while results are comparable to a surgical facelift, it is not a permanent solution. Results last for up to two years, and you may opt to return for a follow-up treatment every six months to a year to maintain new collagen growth.

What results can I expect?

After one session, you may notice a difference in your skin tone and texture immediately following the procedure. However, as the procedure works by triggering the body’s natural collagen production, it may take up to six months before you see the full effect. Your skin should feel smoother, softer, and more elastic as time goes on, with a significant reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet. You should also have a fresher and brighter skin appearance.

How many treatment sessions are needed?

The number of treatment sessions for the Ultherapy Facelift depends on the individual and their skin condition. For many people, only one session is needed to achieve the desired results. However, it may take two sessions for people with deeper wrinkles, pigmentation, or other skin issues for the best outcome. Your doctor can advise you further on how many sessions you will need for your particular skin condition.

Frequently asked questions

Ultherapy Facelift treats the deep layers of the skin, lifting and tightening the skin through natural collagen growth. However, it is unable to produce the exact results of a facelift as it is non-surgical. It is also not a permanent treatment as the results will wear off after a couple of years. It is an ideal alternative for those who wish to avoid the effects of surgery, such as pain, downtime, and scarring.
This treatment is typically not painful, although it depends on the individual. If you feel any pain or discomfort, let your doctor know so they can apply numbing cream to make you more comfortable. You may experience a warming sensation during the procedure, but it should not cause any pain.
As Ultherapy works by stimulating your body's production of collagen and elastin, your skin should become tighter and smoother, with a fresher appearance. You should look at least five years younger than you did before the procedure.
